Plans to build two new high schools in South Austin are gaining momentum, reports the Austin American-Statesman, with the Austin Independent School District preparing to buy land for the projects in early 2015

The money to build the high schools was approved in 2008 as part of a bond referendum that saw voters OK $344 million in school bonds, including $32 million to purchase the land for the schools

Once the land is bought, more bond money will be needed to actually construct the schools, the report says. Potential locations for the new schools have not yet been revealed

Austin-based real estate analyst Charles Heimsath told the Statesman that schools are needed in south Austin due to the rapid residential development taking place in that area and the resulting crowding reported at some schools
