The new Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar isn’t the only big news for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema LLC chain, which said Wednesday it would open its first theater in Los Angeles next year

The nine-screen, 800-capacity theater in Tinseltown will be part of the $180 million mixed-use development known as The Bloc, which will combine retail, entertainment, financial and sports businesses

"We've been eyeing Los Angeles for many years now," Tim League, Alamo’s CEO and founder, said in a statement announcing the new location. "With The Bloc, we finally found the perfect location and partner to bring our brand of cinema to the birthplace of the industry."

The decision to open a theater in the capital of the film industry is the latest step by the Austin-based company toward increasing its footprint on the West Coast

The company recently named Los Angeles-based creative veteran Christian Parkes as its chief branding officer. In an interview following that announcement, Parkes told me Alamo was making a concerted effort to be a bigger player in both movie distribution and as a theatrical outlet
