Austin among top metro areas for Inc. 5000 rankings

Austin has landed 95 companies on Inc. Magazine’s 2014 list of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies, putting it among the top metro areas in the national in the annual rankings

Inc.’s rankings compare companies’ three-year revenue growth and determine the nation’s 5,000 fastest-growing private companies and small businesses. Inc. requests companies provide three years of financial information to be considered for its rankings

Austin was 13th among U.S. metro areas in number of companies making the Inc. 5000 list. The New York metro area led the way with 399 companies in the rankings. The Dallas metro area ranked No. 6 in the nation with 169 firms on the list, while Houston was 12th, just ahead of Austin, with 99 on the list

Ranked by states, Texas had 404 companies on the Inc. 5000 list, trailing on California’s 694. New York state had 335 companies on the list, as some of the companies listed in the New York metro area rankings are in neighboring states like New Jersey and Connecticut

Topping the Austin companies on the list was Simpler Trading, a 12-person financial services company. Simpler Trading ranked No. 21 in the nation with a three-year growth rate of 10,523 percent, according to Inc. Magazine. The company’s annual revenues grew from $106,000 in 2010 to $11.2 million in 2013, according to Inc. Magazine

Two Austin software makers also ranked in the nation’s 100 fastest-growing companies, with Main Street Hub at No. 73 and Phunware at No. 82. Both companies had a three-year growth rate of more than 4,000 percent, according to Inc. Magazine
