Smith Contracting Company Inc. is on deck to be awarded a contract worth up to $4.3 million for the city's reconstruction of Third Street from Congress Avenue to Guadalupe Street

The project is a rebid, and will require City Council's approval before finalized. Council is set to authorize the execution of the deal with the Austin-based contractor at its upcoming April 17 meeting, though the agenda is still in draft form

The larger project was funded by the city's 2010 bond program and includes an eight-block reconstruction of the right of way from Nueces Street to Trinity Street and is now in the third phase. Smith's portion includes work on and along West Third Street from Congress Avenue to Guadalupe Street, including the eastern half of the Guadalupe Street and Third Street intersection, according to city documents

The schedule for this project has been compressed and city officials have added early completion incentives for the contract in an attempt to minimize the impact on businesses in the area. The deal allows one year for completion, according to city documents
