Austin-based Oden Hughes LLC recently broke ground on an upscale apartment community in an environmentally challenging location — west of the intersection of U.S. Highway 290 and Texas Highway 71 near Oak Hill

The 240-unit development sits on a 22-acre site that the company purchased just last month from the Johnson family, which owns Lief Johnson Ford in Austin

Principal Craig Hughes had a previous relationship with the Johnson family, setting the stage for the transaction

More than 16 acres of the land will be preserved as open space. The developer is making a significant investment in a water retention system that will treat water for the site and five adjacent properties

The location is not in the Austin city limits, but Oden Hughes will adhere to the city’s water quality and environmental projection ordinances

The project, dubbed the Landmark Conservancy, is scheduled to open in early 2015
