Austin software startup SonarDesign raises $3 million for growth

- When software startup SonarDesign set out to raise venture capital last year, it didn't have any luck with Austin investors

- Then a friend in Houston offered to set up meetings with potential investors there, and as a result SonarDesign raised $3 million from 30 individual investors

- "Not a single one is in the tech industry. They're from oil and gas and real estate," [SonarDesign CEO Jerry] Bowerman said. "But they're really excited about what we're doing."

- SonarDesign is targeting "creative professionals" such as writers, designers, artists and programmers who want to create high-quality apps with easy-to-use tools. The software allows people to produce software using Web browsers instead of conventional operating systems
