Apple Inc.'s fast-growing Austin campus has matured significantly during the past few months

The site in Northwest Austin near Parmer Lane and McNeil Road is being doubled in size — and that's apparent in the photos. For years, Apple has employed about 3,000 people in a series of nondescript office buildings. In the coming years, more than 6,000 people will work there. Hewlett-Packard Corp.'s North Austin campus is about 10 minutes to the east of Apple's site, and Dell's headquarters is about 10 minutes to the north

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is always tight-lipped, but from what we can tell from these photos interior finish-out is on the horizon. There were about 300 Austin Apple jobs posted on Indeed.com as this week's paper went to press

Most of the new-hires so far have been locals. About 67 percent of Apple’s workers here had Austin addresses even before they were hired, according to data supplied to the city by Apple late last year

When the hiring for the current expansion is all done, Apple could be the fifth-largest employer in Central Texas. With about 3,000 employees at last count for our annual list of largest employers, Apple ranks No. 7 today
