Dell Inc. CEO Michael Dell and his family are willing to add to their donation total for Austin's new health care district in a big way

The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation will give up to $25 million to the Seton Healthcare Family so it can further fund the new teaching hospital set to open in 2017 next to the Frank Erwin Center just north of downtown. The dollar-for-dollar challenge grant was announced by Michael Dell on LinkedIn and caps years of aggressive fundraising efforts

The gift means the new hospital, at 15th and Red River streets, will be known as Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas. The hospital will be located adjacent to the under-construction Dell Medical School at UT, which received a $50 million donation from the foundation in 2013

Seton's 211-bed facility has been priced at $295 million, with $245 million of that total coming directly from Seton and its parent company Ascension Health. The remaining $50 million is to be covered by private donations

"Since 2003, the foundation's Central Texas health investments have centered on creating and supporting the elements necessary to provide 'best in class' care for local families," Susan Dell, co-founder and chairwoman of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, said in a statement. "We want to promote health, not just treat diseases. Our goal always has been to invest in the future of care for the entire community."
