Dell Inc. President Marius Haas disclosed at Nexenta System Inc.'s annual conference on Thursday that his company has made an investment in the data-storage company

He didn't say, however, how much Dell's venture arm has invested in the Santa Clara business led by Tarkan Maner

Nexenta is one of the upstarts in the storage industry competing against legacy giants like EMC Corp. and NetApp Inc. with promises to lower costs and make hardware easier to manage

It has disclosed nearly $50 million in funding, with its most recent round coming in February 2013 when it brought Mark Lockareff on as interim CEO. He was in turn replaced as CEO when Maner was brought on in the fall

Nexenta's other backers include Four Rivers Group, Javelin Venture Partners, Razor’s Edge, West Summit Capital, Presidio Ventures and UMC Capital

In addition to Dell President Haas, Nexenta hosted a series of speakers at its San Francisco conference, including former former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and University of California President Janet Napolitano
