The development of the Fairmont Austin downtown appears to be on track with Tuesday's announcement that Hunt Construction Group has been awarded the $247 million construction contract

The total value of the 47-story project to be built at Cesar Chavez and Red River streets is $370 million

Developer Manchester Texas Financial Group LLC picked Hunt because of a previous track record, according to a statement. Hunt oversaw construction for two other projects Manchester’s parent company built in San Diego — the San Diego Marriott Marquis Hotel and Marina and the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego

Indianapolis-based Hunt also is a partner with DPR Construction, formerly Hardin Construction, in the construction of the JW Marriott Austin, which is more than half-way completed at the corner of Second Street and Congress Avenue. Its 1,012 rooms are scheduled to be delivered in spring 2015

No date was given for groundbreaking or when the 1,000-room Fairmont Austin will be delivered. Originally, the hotel was scheduled to break ground in November 2013, after facing some permitting hurdles

Downtown Austin is buzzing with hotel construction activity. In addition to the JW Marriott Austin, the Westin Downtown Austin also is under construction along with Hotel Van Zandt in the Rainey Street District. The status of construction of the proposed Hotel Zaza at 401 Guadalupe St. is unknown at this time. Several other boutique hotels have been announced, mostly around Rainey Street and in East Austin

Austin’s robust hospitality market was profiled in the New York Times earlier this year, particularly because few hotels are under development across the rest of the country
