A Massachusetts-based customer support company said Wednesday that it plans to hire 1,000 people at its Austin service center by next year

Interactions Corp. said the jobs will primarily be data entry positions and customer service assistants who listen in on calls to interactive voice-response systems. Pay for most jobs will start at $12 to $18 per hour, officials said. Most positions are full-time and offer health care benefits, they said

Founded in 2004, Interactions provides support for companies in communications, retail, insurance, health care and travel. Its 40 clients include Humana, Hyatt Hotels, Best Western Hotels, Lifelock and TXU Energy

Interactions, which has raised $100 million in venture capital, opened its Austin operations in 2007 and has about 300 employees here. The company will add the new jobs at its existing offices in North Austin off Interstate 35

“Austin has a dynamic environment fueled by a talented, bilingual workforce,” said Mike Iacobucci, Interactions CEO. “The business-friendly and progressive climate welcome growing corporations and foster a spirit of entrepreneurism.”

Interactions calls its employees “virtual assistants” who listen in on customer calls to voice response systems and direct the computer when it can’t understand customer responses or runs into a problem

The company said it also plans to hire 1,000 people at its Indianapolis customer service center. Officials said the hiring push is driven by the Interactions’ expanding customer base

“This is a market that has been relatively stale in terms of what automation can do,” Iacobucci said. “We help transform frustrating customer experiences into really productive conversations that all these major organizations are trying to obtain. As a result, we are growing very substantially.”
