Goodwill Industries of Central Texas Inc. will open another large store at 914 N. Lamar Blvd. next week

The 12,000-square-foot space was the site of the original Whole Foods Market, and later Cheapo Records. Goodwill will preserve a number of interior and exterior murals that have adorned the property for years

“It’s always energizing to open a location in the heart of Austin,” said Jerry Davis, president and CEO of Goodwill in Central Texas, in a statement. “This is part of the city in which old meets new, and our store is a perfect reflection of this.”

Goodwill will continue to operate its store at 2800 S. Lamar Blvd. Last year the nonprofit tried to create an affordable housing development at that site in conjunction with Foundation Communities, but the deal fell apart when the necessary tax credits and funding did not materialize

Goodwill has played an active role in Austin's real estate scene during the past couple of years, purchasing a large industrial site and expanding the number of retail stores, which now includes 31 locations in Central Texas
