HID Global’s new world headquarters and North American Operations Center in North Austin has earned the highest level of sustainability as measured by the U.S. Green Building Council

The 250,000-square-foot facility at 611 Center Ridge Drive earned a Platinum LEED rating, the only industrial manufacturing facility in Texas to achieve the coveted status, company officials said in a statement

The plant — which specializes in the production of corporate identification badges and other security products — opened in January with a staff of 40, but the company anticipates employing about 400 workers by the end of 2015. The company moved its headquarters to Central Texas from Irvine, California

Platinum LEED buildings are a rarity across the country, with just 6 percent of all LEED-certified projects earning the highest distinction

Though Austin Energy Green Building is considered one of the major forerunners of the international LEED program, real estate builders and investors in Austin haven’t been as aggressive in seeking LEED certification as in other cities. Just four other commercial real estate projects in Austin have received the Platinum ranking besides HID Global. Click on the accompanying photo to see those properties
