UnLtd USA, a socially-conscious business incubator, has opened applications for its next class of Austin entrepreneurs

The incubator, which launched in East Austin in February 2014, is looking for entrepreneurs "tackling tough social and environmental challenges with seed funding and 12 months of customized support," according to an announcement

Last year's class of five startups was selected from a pool of 80 applicants. UnLtd USA based its model on UnLtd, an organization that launched in the United Kingdom in 2003. It has since supported more than 20,000 early-stage social entrepreneurs

UnLtd USA was founded by Zoe Schlag, who was previously an incubation associate for UnLtd India. The Austin group operates out of Center61, a co-working space on 17th Street in East Austin

UnLtd invests $5,000 in seed-stage companies, and $10,000 in companies a year or older. It doesn't take an equity stake. Instead, startups are asked to invest in another UnLtd company within three years, Cristina Diodati, the group's search and selection associate, has said

The first Austin class included: Compost recycling program Compost Pedallers, employment marketplace GirlsGuild, mental health care tool maker Mentegram, education budgeting tool maker PelotonU; and water conservation specialist Ten Acre Organics
