Retail industry software maker Upstream Commerce Ltd. is opening its North American headquarters in Austin, managed by a former Bazaarvoice Inc. executive

The Israel-based company, which develops competitive price monitoring software, enlisted Bill Fanning as general manager of North America and vice president of sales. He was previously divisional vice president of retail enterprise sales at Austin-based Bazaarvoice (Nasdaq: BV)

Upstream Commerce, founded in 2010, claims as customers retailers such as Staples Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) and Toys “R” Us Inc. It doesn’t disclose the number of workers it employs and Fanning declined to say how many it planned to employ in Austin

The company is considering several locations and plans to select an office by the end of the year. Upstream Commerce’s development and management teams would remain in Israel while sales and marketing would be based in Austin, Fanning said

“We have a huge amount of demand in North America,” he said. “And we need hiring to fill that demand.”
