George K. Baum & Co., a Missouri-based investment banking firm, has expanded its national presence with a public finance office in Austin

Vice President Brad Angst is expected to focus on broadening business in Central Texas and providing support to the firm’s public finance office in Dallas, according to a Tuesday announcement

The announcement doesn't indicate where the office is or how many workers it employs. A company spokesman couldn't be reached for comment

Angst first joined George K. Baum & Co. in 2008 and rejoined in 2014. He is responsible for investment banking and financial advisory services, which include the transaction execution and quantitative structuring of tax-exempt and taxable debt financing

George K. Baum & Co., founded in 1928, got its start selling government bonds out of the back of a car. CEO Jonathan Baum joined the firm in 1991, acquiring it in 1994 and helping the company branch out to private equity, strategic advisory services and wealth management

He founded George K. Baum Trust Co. in 1994, built it up to $360 million in assets and sold it to Gold Banc Corp. Inc. in 2002. The private equity arm, George K. Baum Capital Partners, became almost legendary in Kansas City, Mo., financial services circles, gathering huge gains for its investors until the fund closed in 2009
