Travelers flying through Austin-Bergstrom International Airport have a new way to get to their flight courtesy of FlightCar Inc., which launched at ABIA in mid December

The app-based peer-to-peer program lets users rent out their car to other FlightCar users while it would otherwise be sitting in the airport parking lot. The company facilitates the transaction and provides drop-off and pickup service for car owners and renters. Vehicle owners' insurance is safe, as cars put up for rent are covered by a $1 million FlightCar insurance policy

"We're excited to add two more cities to the FlightCar roster," FlightCar co-founder and CEO Rujul Zaparde said in an announcement. "Austin is one of the most sharing-friendly cities in the country"

Cambridge, Massachusetts-based FlightCar, whose investors include Hollywood celebrity Ashton Kutcher, also operates in seven other U.S. cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Dallas

FlightCar is one of several startups to jolt Austin's transportation industry in the past year
