Austin-based network services provider Alpheus Communications has expanded its Austin data center near the downtown area, as the company continues to grow, officials said

The company’s data center at 1905 E. 6th St. was previously about 2,500 square feet but due to demand, the expanded center has grown to 10,000 square feet, said CEO Scott Widham. It could potentially grow to 15,000 square feet, as demand warrants, he said

The Austin-based company is seeing a boom in demand for data center space, especially given that Austin is sufficiently inland as to not be affected by hurricanes or tropical storms. Alpheus’ data centers are also useful to companies building cloud applications and delivering primary, backup or redundant data centers and fiber network services from a single provider

The 6th Street data center offers connections to more than 75 carriers, and is one of several data centers that Alpheus operates in Texas – including one in Fort Worth, two in Dallas and two in Houston

The company employs about 16 locally and 120 overall, Widham said. It has also for the last two years provided network services and Internet connectivity from its 6th Street center to South by Southwest events
