Newspaper publisher adding 150 jobs in Austin

A large number of daily and weekly newspapers from across the U.S. will soon be produced in Austin. Fairport, N.Y.-based GateHouse Media will open its Center for News and Design late next month in Northeast Austin at the Northview Business Center, on 9001 N. Interstate 35 near Rundberg Lane

GateHouse Media owns and operates about 400 websites and newspapers nationwide – a mix of large dailies and smaller weekly publications – in cities such as Stockton, Calif.; Norwich, Conn.; Peoria, Ill.; Cape Cod, Mass.; and Utica, N.Y.

The chain’s newspapers will be designed and edited at the Center for News and Design, then electronically transmitted back to each newspaper so they can be printed and delivered to subscribers

In addition to design and copy editing work, employees at the Center for News and Design will also create content for GateHouse Media’s websites, according to David Arkin, the company’s vice president of content and audience. The chain also expects to take on contract work from other companies that own newspapers across the country, Arkin said

About 100 employees should be on board by August, with 150 expected to be on staff by year’s end, Arkin said

About two dozen of those workers will come from GateHouse Media design and copy-editing hubs in Rockford, Ill., and Framingham, Mass., that are set to close

The center had initially been slated to open by the end of 2013, but Arkin said the company faced challenges locating office space in Austin’s tight commercial real estate market

“The process of picking and finalizing a space took longer than we anticipated,” he said, “but we’re extremely pleased with our home for the Center for News and Design. The proximity to downtown and the interstate is perfect for our employees.”

Arkin said GateHouse Media opted to locate the Center for News and Design in Austin in part because of the available talent pool, including graduates of journalism programs at area colleges, including the University of Texas. The city’s appeal to prospective employees across the nation also played a role, he said
