Second Kimber Modern hotel on drawing boards

The owners of the Kimber Modern boutique hotel in South Austin are planning a second location on the eastern edge of the Rainey Street neighborhood downtown at 62 and 64 East Ave


Partners Kimber Cavendish and Vicki Faust are teaming up with contractor Mike Rhodes of Acero Construction to build what will be called “Kimber Modern Rainey.”


About 30 rooms are on the drawing board along with a lobby, bar, restaurant and pool


Burton Baldridge, principal of Burton Baldridge Architects, is handling the sleek and ultra-modern design


The site has some challenges overlooking I-35, but there’s no doubt that the area is emerging as an area to see and be seen with the growing collection of bars, restaurants, hotels and high rise apartments around Rainey Street, which began its transformation about five years ago with the introduction of the Lustre Pearl bar


Skyhouse Austin, is preleasing its luxury high rise apartments, Hotel Van Zandt has broken ground and the quirky Container Bar will open this fall
