Simon invests in upgrades at Austin mall

Simon Property Group Inc. (NYSE: SPG) is remodeling the food court at Barton Creek Square mall. Construction will be completed in November


The retail giant will install bar-height seating with charging stations, add hand-washing stations, renovate restrooms and enlarge the existing family restroom. The remodel will include new flooring and seating for 500 shoppers


The food court will continue to operate during regular shopping hours. Most work will be done overnight


The architectural design was handled by LawKingdon Architecture and the contractor is the Law Company Inc., both of Wichita, Kan.


Barton Creek Square is the second-largest shopping center in Austin based on the most recent Austin Business Journal list of retail centers, with 1.4 million square feet.


It was built in 1981 and renovated in 2003. Indianapolis-based Simon owns a large percentage of retail space in Austin, including The Domain shopping center and Lakeline Mall
