St. David’s HealthCare will launch a new pediatric program at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center that will provide emergency, inpatient and intensive care services for children. The center, which represents a $16 million investment for the health care group, is scheduled to open in December

The program will feature a 10-bed emergency department, eight beds in its surgical inpatient unit and a six-bed pediatric intensive care unit. Staff will include pediatric physicians, nurses and assorted specialists

St. David’s opted to create the center to meet the growing need for newborns requiring a higher level of care for conditions such as Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The hospital has delivered more than 50,000 babies since 1995 and it opened the St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas in 2008 to meet the growing needs of women, including obstetrics, in the Austin area

“As a hospital that promotes the health and well-being of women and their newborn babies at St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas, it makes sense to offer families a continuum of pediatric hospital services,” Allen Harrison, chief executive officer of St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, said in a statement

“With the launch of this new program, we are offering a choice to many who have expressed a desire to receive care for their children at a St. David’s HealthCare hospital, including parents of babies born here.”
