The Austin restaurant scene is growing, and new restaurants are opening everyday across the city.
No longer do you have to venture downtown to try the city’s best restaurants.
In fact, there are a number of delicious and exciting new spots that have opened up in Southwest Austin and the surrounding suburbs.
To get the scoop, I sat down with our AQUILA restaurant expert Jason Faludi to find out his four can’t miss spots that opened in southwest Austin this year.
The acclaimed barbecuers behind Stiles Switch BBQ have opened a second restaurant, The Switch, in Dripping Springs.
The Switch serves up the same delicious barbecue that Stiles Switch is known for and has also expanded the menu to offer their spin on Cajun specialties, including brisket and sausage gumbo, sausage and crawfish pot pie, and bayou beef rib and grits. There’s also a special brunch menu offered from 10 am to 4 pm on Sundays.
Jason’s Tip: Incredible barbecue and Cajun food. What’s not to like? Get the beef rib, baby. And bring your friends.
Cruzteca Mexican Kitchen
Lovers of the Mellizoz Tacos trailer will be thrilled to hear that in 2018 the owners of the truck opened a brick and mortar restaurant on Brodie Lane.
The menu features an expanded version of the taco truck spread, with new menu items added weekly, according to their website. Not only are there new flavors to try, the restaurant also serves margaritas, beer and wine to enjoy alongside your tacos.
Jason’s Tip: The Slowrider Taco is my favorite. It’s got braised beef, caramelized onion, cotija cheese and cilantro. Delicious!
Backspin Sports Bar & Grill
South Austin-favorite Backspin Sports Bar & Grill opened a second location this year. Located in the Belterra Village development in Dripping Springs, this restaurant offers the same menu as the original location, including bar snacks, burgers, sandwiches and pizza.
A classic sports bar, Backspin features over a dozen TVs playing all of the day’s big games. And no matter your taste, your sure to find something to eat (and drink) that you’ll enjoy. The food is all made from scratch, and the bar offers up cold draft beer and a seasonal cocktail menu.
Jason’s Tip: This pub grub will catch you by surprise with how good it is. Be sure to come hungry and enjoy the games.
Drippings Springs now has a JuiceLand! The Austin favorite, which now has locations across the state (and one in New York) opened a location in Belterra Village in 2018.
The new store is located in a new retail development just along US-290, where it joins other Austin favorites including Torchy’s Tacos, Hat Creek Burger and the Stiles Switch spin-off, The Switch.
And this isn’t the only location JuiceLand opened in 2018. Other new locations include The Domain, South First Street and Balcones, with more to come in 2019 (stay tuned).
Jason’s Tip: This place is so fresh it’s bananas! Seriously though, my favorites include The Originator, Wundershowzen, the Double Rainbow Quinoa Bowl and the Yerba Mate for a little boost when I need it. My son digs the Clementine and the Home Run.
