Considered one of the most desirable places to live in the Austin area, West Lake Hills (often referred to as Westlake) is a neighborhood just six miles west of downtown. With an award-winning school district and athletic program, it’s no wonder this area prides itself on excellence, both academically and athletically. The tight-knit community is actually a city unto itself, where homes sit upon hills and views of downtown can be seen from many viewpoints.
Raised in Westlake, AQUILA broker Brad Buckman fills us in on some of his favorite things to do and how the area has changed in this month’s Q&A.
Q: You were raised in Westlake and now you are moving back there after living downtown. Why did you decide to move back?
A: For me, it is home. It’s where I grew up. It’s such a great community that is purely focused around the schools in the area. My wife and I are actually moving back into my childhood home which is pretty awesome! We wanted the neighborhood and community feel that you just don’t really get living downtown.
Q: How has the area changed since you were younger?
A: It’s definitely gotten bigger; not only population-wise, but the town itself has really grown. Westlake High School is a lot different since I was there – they’ve added on and renovated it.
Unfortunately, I have noticed that the traffic has gotten a lot worse which is a huge bummer. But I guess that goes hand-in-hand with all of the growth.
Q: What are some of your favorite places to eat in Westlake?
A: Texas Honey Ham has awesome breakfast tacos and sandwiches – it is a Westlake gem! Also, the lettuce-wrapped burger at Hat Creek Burger Company is delicious. Westlake just got a Modern Market on Bee Cave Road, which is a farm-fresh fast casual place. Other places I like to go to are Thundercloud Subs, Juiceland, County Line BBQ, and Maudie’s Milagro.
Q: What kinds of things do you like to do in the area?
A: I love to hike the greenbelt or tube down the streams of Barton Creek (it was in my backyard growing up so we used to do that all the time.) Since I used to play basketball at Westlake, I like to go to the Westlake basketball and football games during their seasons – you can’t beat the energy! I also like to golf at Barton Creek Country Club or Austin Country Club, and you can’t beat an early morning or weekend wake surfing sesh on Lake Austin!
Q: Although Westlake is more residentially dense, there are a number of companies that have offices there. Can you tell us a few major companies in the area?
A: Apple has an office at Capital Ridge, right next to the new Hotel Granduca on Loop 360 (Capital of Texas Highway). Dimensional Fund Advisors offices at Dimensional Place, which is just down the street at Loop 360 and Bee Cave Road. And Spiceworks is at 3900 San Clemente, which is also on Loop 360, just south of Lake Austin. There is also a new 32,000-SF office development in Davenport Ranch that is set to open in the next year or so.
